Users of YouTube Shorts have noticed that some videos have become sharper and clearer, but at the same time have acquired an unnatural appearance. They discovered filters and effects on the videos similar to those typically created by AI, such as a plastic texture of hair or enhanced contouring. The discussion among viewers and content creators intensified after the publication of comparisons “before” and “after” video processing on Reddit.
Representatives of YouTube confirmed that they are conducting an experiment with processing Shorts videos using “traditional machine learning.” According to Rene Ritchie, the platform’s editor-in-chief, the system is designed to reduce blur, remove noise, and improve the clarity of clips during processing. The company emphasized that it does not apply generative AI and does not use the “upscaling” feature, and the technology resembles video processing on modern smartphones.
Some video creators expressed dissatisfaction that the changes occurred without warning and without the option to opt-out of the experiment. They noted that the effects appear too noticeable and may alter the perception of their content by viewers. Among the main complaints are the lack of transparency regarding new features and the impact on the original appearance of the videos.
In July, YouTube updated its monetization policy to penalize the publication of low-quality content created using AI. Now part of the community believes that the platform itself has begun to implement effects reminiscent of automated processing. YouTube representatives have not yet reported whether authors will have the option to leave their videos without additional processing.
