YouTube CEO Neal Mohan in his annual letter named generative AI as one of the company’s four main development priorities through 2025. YouTube is actively investing in AI-based tools for content creators, including video idea generation, thumbnail creation, and language translation. This month, the automatic dubbing feature will become available to all YouTube Partner Program members, allowing creators to easily translate their videos into different languages. In addition, YouTube is working on technologies to determine users’ ages in order to provide them with appropriate recommendations and content.
However, the introduction of AI into the video creation process has not been without criticism. Some experts believe that AI-generated content may lower the quality of materials on the platform. Others see it as a useful tool to streamline video production rather than replace creativity.
The company also plans to expand its tools for detecting and controlling the use of AI on the platform. This includes extending a pilot program with Creative Artists Agency, which will provide more opportunities to identify and manage content created with AI that uses the likenesses of famous people. Last fall, YouTube announced a new set of tools to protect creators from having their appearance or voice copied in videos.
Expanding the Content ID system will make it possible to detect fake faces or voices created with AI. This is an important step to protect the rights of authors, musicians, actors, and athletes.
