The young company Songscription has introduced a service that automates music transcription using AI. Users can upload an audio file of a song and receive sheet music within minutes. The product operates on a freemium model and is aimed at both professional and amateur musicians.

Currently, Songscription supports transcription for several instruments, with the best performance for piano. The company plans to add other formats, including guitar tablatures, as well as the ability to create arrangements for an entire ensemble. For those who cannot read sheet music, the service creates a “piano roll” — a digital visualization for a virtual piano.
Users can upload their own audio file or provide a link to YouTube. Songscription also allows editing of the generated scores, which can help quickly prepare sheet music for personal needs.
To train the model, the company enlisted musicians who agreed to share their performances and sheet music, and also used sheet music from open sources and synthetic data. Songscription has already received investments from Reach Capital and joined the StartX accelerator from Stanford.
