Pinterest has announced the introduction of new features to tackle the influx of images generated by AI, which has recently caused dissatisfaction among the platform’s users. Now, all images identified as created or modified by generative AI will display a special “AI modified” label in the lower left corner when viewing a pin in enlarged format. Pinterest’s developers use both image metadata and proprietary classifiers capable of detecting AI content even without explicit markers.
For creators whose works may be mistakenly labeled as AI-generated, an appeals system is provided. The company emphasized that the accuracy of automatic AI content detection will gradually improve as algorithms are refined.
Another new feature is an experimental option to control the number of AI-generated pins in the feed. Users will be able to choose the “see less” option for such images in categories most affected by the influx of AI content, particularly in the “art” and “beauty” sections. This feature will be available via the three-dot menu in the lower right corner of a pin and will later be extended to other categories.
In recent months, Pinterest has faced a wave of criticism due to the large number of inauthentic images, which made it harder to find real ideas for inspiration and practical use. The new tools are designed to help users more quickly distinguish human content from AI-generated content, as well as customize their own experience on the platform.
