The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has, for the first time, officially regulated the use of generative AI in its rules for the Academy Awards. According to the updated nomination requirements, the use of AI and other digital tools during film production does not, in itself, affect eligibility for the award.
The new rules state that the main criterion for selecting winners remains the degree of human involvement in the creative process. The Academy and its relevant branches will evaluate achievements based on how much a human was at the center of creative authorship.
This is the first time generative AI has been mentioned in the Academy’s rules. The decision comes amid active discussions about the role of new technologies in the film industry and follows large-scale strikes by actors and screenwriters in Hollywood, which were partly related to the growing influence of AI.
The updated rules also stipulate that Academy members may participate in final voting only if they have watched all the films in the relevant category. However, this is self-certified and does not require additional proof.
