OpenAI announced the release of its Sora app for Android, which is now available on the Google Play Store in the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Previously, Sora launched on iOS in September and was downloaded over a million times in the first five days. The app allows users to create videos using text prompts or an initial image, and also to add themselves or friends as video characters with the “cameo” feature.
Users can choose video styles such as cinematic, animated, photorealistic, cartoonish, or unusual. The “character cameo” feature is available, allowing the creation of recurring avatars for videos. Developers plan to enable rights holders to charge extra for the appearance of famous characters in videos.
In Sora, users can participate in collaborative creative projects, modify others’ videos, add new scenes, change characters, or expand the storyline. The app offers a video feed similar to TikTok, where users can view others’ works and share their own projects. The Sora community is actively growing thanks to these opportunities for creativity and interaction.
In recent weeks, Sora has received feedback regarding copyright protection and deepfakes, prompting OpenAI to change its opt-out policy for rights holders. The app is now available without a waitlist in some countries, expanding the user base that can create and publish AI-generated videos.
