OpenAI has introduced a new program for scientific work called Prism , which combines AI with modern standards for writing research papers. Prism operates in the cloud and supports LaTeX, allowing scientists to create and edit texts together without the need for local software setup.
The service is available for free to all users with a personal ChatGPT account. OpenAI promises to soon provide access for organizations with ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education plans. Users can create an unlimited number of projects and invite collaborators without seat limitations.
Prism uses the GPT-5.2 model, which integrates directly into the workflow with manuscripts. The model can interact with the structure of the paper, equations, references, and document context. It helps prepare drafts, edit text, search for and add relevant scientific sources, including from arXiv, and convert handwritten equations or diagrams into LaTeX format.
Users can make changes by voice or with simple queries, and all edits occur in real-time. Prism allows multiple authors to work on a document simultaneously, minimizing version conflicts and simplifying collaboration.
OpenAI built Prism on the Crixet platform, which the company previously acquired. Early community feedback highlights the “LaTeX-first” approach, flexible collaboration, and the ability to support writing, justification, and formatting in one space.
