OpenAI is preparing to launch a new tool called Operator, which can perform tasks in a web browser. This tool will be available as a beta version for users with a Pro subscription costing $200. Changes discovered in the ChatGPT codebase indicate that Operator will be available as a preview for these users. Although the changes are not yet publicly visible, a user on the X platform under the nickname Choi discovered these updates in the ChatGPT client code.
Operator will be available on the ChatGPT website and will not interact with the user’s computer. OpenAI will likely use a web browser on its own servers to perform tasks. This means that users will be able to automate certain actions they usually perform manually in a web browser, such as task management or interacting with business tools.
On the subscription plans page, OpenAI will add “Access to Operator research preview” as one of the Pro plan benefits. Operator is a specific implementation of the company’s agent platform in a secure environment. The launch of this feature could be an important step in the development of automation tools for users who want to simplify routine tasks.
