OpenAI has announced the availability of its new image generator for all users. Previously, this feature was only available to paid ChatGPT subscribers.
chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users!
— Sam Altman (@sama) April 1, 2025
The image generation is powered by the GPT-4o model. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the update has already been “rolled out to all free users.” Although the company does not specify exact limits, the announcement mentions “limited access.” Altman previously wrote that the limit is three generations per day — this is the restriction the system applies.
The feature became available on March 25, but it was enabled for the free tier with a delay. After launch, the company recorded extremely high demand — at its peak, the service was receiving up to a million new users per hour.
Users are actively testing the new feature and sharing their results on social media. Reviews highlight the generation speed, stable performance, and user-friendly interface.
