OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the release of GPT-5 might happen this summer, but the exact date is still unknown. He explained that the boundaries between model versions are now blurred due to complexity and continuous improvement, so the new model could become either a standalone product or the result of gradual updates to GPT-4o.
Altman noted that the definition of “general-purpose AI” changes every year, and more people believe that current models are already approaching this level. However, he disagrees with the notion that such a level has already been reached, even with the emergence of the new o3 model.
OpenAI does not view the development of general-purpose AI as a one-time event but sees it as a gradual process. The company believes that the system will become “superintelligent” if it can independently make scientific discoveries or significantly enhance the quality of human research, but currently, no AI has achieved this.
Regarding the monetization of ChatGPT, Altman stated that advertising is not planned at the moment, as it could undermine user trust. However, the company is considering ways to generate revenue from free users as early as next year.
