The company OpenAI supports the creation of the animated film “Critterz,” which is planned for release in 2026 after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. The main part of the work on the film is done using AI tools, including the new flagship model GPT-5.
The budget for “Critterz” is less than 30 million dollars, and the production lasts nine months. In comparison, traditional animated films often cost significantly more and take several years to create. Partners from Los Angeles and London — Native Foreign and Vertigo Films — have joined the project.
OpenAI aims to show the film industry that generative AI can provide quality results with lower costs and shorter timeframes. The film uses capabilities such as script creation, character development, and animation with AI.
The developers hope that the example of “Critterz” will encourage studios to consider AI as an effective tool for film creation. It is expected that audiences will be able to enjoy the film in theaters worldwide after its festival premiere.
