OpenAI announced the launch of GPT-5.1 — an update to its core line of AI models for ChatGPT. Users will gain access to two new variants: “GPT-5.1 Instant” and “GPT-5.1 Thinking”. “Instant” better follows instructions, responds faster to simple queries, and provides a warmer, friendlier manner of communication. “Thinking” adapts the time to solve a task depending on the complexity of the question, works faster with easy tasks, and analyzes complex queries more deeply, explaining them in more understandable language.
The new models will gradually become available to ChatGPT users, initially for paid subscription users, and later for free accounts. Previous versions of GPT-5 will remain accessible in the legacy menu for another three months. Both new variants will be available through the API, allowing developers to integrate these models into their services.
The update also introduces enhanced personalization capabilities for communication style. Now, users can choose from eight styles, including “Default”, “Professional”, “Friendly”, “Candid”, “Quirky”, “Efficient”, “Nerdy”, and “Cynical”. An experimental settings panel will be available for some users, where they can adjust the conciseness of responses, the degree of warmth, and the frequency of emoji use.
According to OpenAI, these changes aim to make ChatGPT more flexible and convenient for different user groups — from students to company employees. The updated models better follow instructions, improve the quality of responses in technical and mathematical topics, and adapt more quickly to individual communication needs.
