OpenAI has introduced a generative AI model that stands out for its creative writing capabilities. Altman himself, OpenAI’s CEO, noted in a post on X that the model demonstrates remarkable success in writing metafictional literary works. He shared an excerpt generated in response to a prompt about a story exploring the theme of AI and grief, emphasizing that this was the first time he had been so impressed by a text written by AI.
Interestingly, OpenAI had not previously focused on creative writing, preferring more predictable fields such as mathematics and programming. However, it now appears the company has decided to explore the potential of generative models in literature. Jeanette Winterson, a British writer, believes the results produced by the new model are “beautiful and moving.”
Other writers have also shared their impressions of the model’s capabilities. Kamila Shamsie noted that if a student submitted such work in her class, she would be impressed by the quality of the text. At the same time, she reflects on the impact of AI on creativity and copyright, stressing the importance of a fair approach to using creative works for training models.
