OpenAI reported a major outage affecting ChatGPT, Sora, and the API, which began around 3 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday. The company stated that the services were mostly restored by 9 p.m. “ChatGPT, API, and Sora were unavailable today, but we have restored their operation,” OpenAI noted on Twitter.
The cause of the outage remains unknown. OpenAI reported that their services gradually resumed operation starting at 7 p.m. During the outage, the ChatGPT.com website displayed an error message: “ChatGPT is currently unavailable. We have identified the issue and are working to resolve it.”
The outage occurred on the same day OpenAI launched integration with Apple in iOS 18.2. Some users reported on social media that ChatGPT was not working in Apple Intelligence due to this outage. “The OpenAI outage is not related to 12 Days of OpenAI or Apple Intelligence,” said OpenAI’s developer community lead Edwin Arbus in a post on X.
Earlier this week, OpenAI also publicly launched Sora. CEO Sam Altman noted that the company did not anticipate such high interest, so they had to limit the number of users who could sign up. Many users who did register were unable to generate videos on launch day, receiving messages about OpenAI server overload.
