OpenAI has announced the rollout of a new memory feature in ChatGPT, allowing the AI chatbot to adapt its responses based on previous conversations with users. This feature, appearing in ChatGPT settings as “reference to saved memories,” is designed to make interactions with ChatGPT more relevant for users.
The update will add context to ChatGPT’s text, voice, and image capabilities. The new memory feature will initially be available to ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers, except for users in the United Kingdom, EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, where additional external checks are required to comply with local regulations.
The memory feature aims to make interactions with ChatGPT smoother and more personalized—users will no longer need to repeat information they have already provided. In ChatGPT settings, users can disable the new memory feature or manage specific saved memories. It is also possible to ask ChatGPT what it remembers or switch to a temporary chat where conversations are not saved.
Last year, OpenAI updated ChatGPT so it could forget or remember certain details at the user’s request. However, this feature typically required an explicit prompt from the user to update ChatGPT’s memory. Today’s update makes this process more automatic. The new memory feature will be enabled by default for users who previously had ChatGPT’s memory capabilities activated.
