According to the released information, if the watermark is implemented, it will only apply to users who use ChatGPT for free. Subscribers to paid plans will still be able to generate images without watermarks. It is currently unknown whether the watermark will be visible to humans or implemented as an invisible element detectable only by special tools.
The image generation feature based on the GPT-4o model was recently opened to all users, whereas previously it was available only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers or other paid plans. The generated images already contain C2PA metadata, which allows their origin to be identified — a kind of invisible tag for confirming authorship.
OpenAI has not officially commented on plans to introduce watermarks in images created via ChatGPT. However, users can expect that testing this new feature may affect how generative AI is used to create illustrations, especially for free accounts.
