OpenAI opened the group chat feature in ChatGPT for all users worldwide. Now anyone logged in on Free, Go, Plus, or Pro plans can invite up to 20 people to a shared conversation with the chatbot. The group chat is created through the “people” icon in the upper right corner of the app, after which you can share the joining link with other participants.
The first login or group creation requires entering a name, nickname, and photo to help identify interlocutors. During collaborative work, such as planning a trip or organizing a dinner, ChatGPT can respond to all participants and react to emoji messages. If you need a response specifically from AI, you can mention “ChatGPT” in the text.
Participants have access to group settings, where they can add or remove people, mute notifications, and set individual instructions for ChatGPT. AI does not use personal memories from private chats in group conversations and does not create new ones based on them. For group responses, “GPT-5.1 Auto” is used, which selects the best model depending on the request and available options.
Children under 18 receive automatic content restrictions, and parents can completely disable this feature. Invitations to the group are made through special links available to all conversation participants.
