OpenAI has updated the beta version of its ChatGPT app, allowing Android users to set this AI model as their default digital assistant. This became possible in version 1.2025.070, where ChatGPT is added to the list of options on the digital assistant settings page, provided it is installed on the device. Now, users can choose ChatGPT as their primary assistant, activating it by long-pressing the power button or using a quick access shortcut from the corner of the screen.
This innovation allows users who prefer ChatGPT over other assistants, such as Google Gemini or Perplexity, to easily switch between them. Although the feature is currently in beta, it still enables the use of ChatGPT’s voice mode with an on-screen overlay. Initially, the app tries to open in full-screen chat mode, but then switches to a more convenient overlay mode.
This overlay mode can also be activated via a new shortcut in the quick settings, which was released at the beginning of 2025. Such functionality may be convenient for those who frequently use ChatGPT to interact with a digital assistant, providing quick access to voice commands and information.
