OpenAI is considering introducing ads in ChatGPT, reports the Financial Times. Although CEO Sam Altman is not a supporter of this idea, CFO Sarah Friar noted that the company is weighing options for an advertising business model. She emphasized the need to carefully consider where and when ads would appear.
Friar also stressed that there are currently no active plans to introduce ads. However, OpenAI recently hired Shivakumar Venkataraman, a former Google employee, to work in this direction.
Until now, OpenAI has relied on subscriptions to support the development of its generative AI tools. The cost of creating and maintaining these models is very high, and the amount of investment they can attract is limited.
Sam Altman expressed his attitude toward advertising during a recent event at Harvard Business School. He noted that advertising could be “a last resort” for the company. Altman emphasized: “I’m not saying OpenAI will never consider advertising, but overall I don’t like it, and I think the combination of ‘ads plus AI’ is somewhat unsettling to me.”
