OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the company is confident in its ability to create artificial general intelligence (AGI), as traditionally understood in the tech industry. He predicts that this year, AI agents capable of autonomously performing certain tasks could significantly change company outcomes. Altman made this statement in a blog post where he discussed OpenAI’s past and future. The company’s next goal is “superintelligence in the truest sense of the word.”
Altman noted that superintelligence could greatly accelerate scientific discoveries and innovation. This, in turn, could significantly increase well-being and prosperity. The description of superintelligence as AI agents surpassing human intelligence echoes OpenAI’s previous definition of AGI. The company has repeatedly stated that its main goal is to develop AGI that benefits all of humanity.
Altman also commented on the events that led to his dismissal as CEO of OpenAI, his hiring at Microsoft, and his return to OpenAI in November 2023. He acknowledged that this was “a major failure in governance” and expressed gratitude for the efforts of many people who helped strengthen OpenAI’s governance system.
