OpenAI is expanding the Advanced Voice Mode feature in ChatGPT for web users, allowing direct communication with the chatbot through a browser. This was announced by the company’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil on the X platform.
The feature, which makes conversations with ChatGPT more natural, is available to paid users starting this week. This means you need to be a Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu subscriber to access it.
The web platform launch follows the debut of Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT apps for iOS and Android in September. Advanced Voice Mode uses GPT-4o’s audio capabilities for real conversations between users and ChatGPT. The chatbot can understand nonverbal cues, such as speech rate, and respond with emotion.
To start a voice conversation on the web, select the Voice icon in the lower right corner of the ChatGPT prompt window. Then, grant your browser permission to access your computer’s microphone. Once the voice conversation begins, a screen with a blue sphere in the center will appear.
Users can choose from nine voices for ChatGPT, each with its own tone and character. For example, you can select “Arbor,” which is “light and versatile,” or “Ember,” which is “confident and optimistic.”
Weil noted that OpenAI plans to make this feature available to free users “in the coming weeks.” Plus and Team subscribers have a daily usage limit for Advanced Voice Mode. OpenAI notifies users when they have 15 minutes of daily usage left for the feature.
