In October, Netflix shut down Team Blue, the studio responsible for developing games for the platform. This studio was established two years ago with the goal of creating AAA games. Despite ambitious plans, the studio did not manage to release a single project, and Netflix decided to change its strategy in the gaming industry.
The new Vice President of the GenAI division at Netflix Games, Mike Verdu, announced that the company will now focus on generative AI. According to him, this technology is the future of the gaming industry and will unlock new opportunities.
Despite shutting down Team Blue, Netflix is not abandoning its gaming business. The company has already succeeded in bringing third-party games to its platform, such as Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition. However, it is still unclear how generative AI will be used in Netflix’s internal studios.
Other major developers are also actively exploring the possibilities of AI. Electronic Arts and Ubisoft have already announced their plans to integrate AI into their games. However, there are still no examples of major projects that significantly rely on generative AI tools. Netflix aims to be at the forefront of this technological transformation.
