Midjourney has announced the launch of an updated web tool that will allow users to edit any images from the internet using generative AI. The new tool will let users change colors and object details in images simply by adding text prompts. According to the statement of Midjourney founder and CEO David Holz, the tool will become available to a limited part of the community as early as next week.
Importantly, the ethical use of such technologies is sparking increasing debate. Meta and Google are already working on the issue of labeling images created or altered with AI. Last year, Midjourney agreed to use the IPTC standard to mark AI-generated images, but has not yet implemented the C2PA system, which tracks the full chain of their creation.
Holz also noted that the launch of the new feature will be accompanied by increased oversight from moderators, as well as the introduction of “advanced AI moderators” to minimize abuse of the technology. The system is still being tested, and the company is collecting feedback from the community regarding who will get access to the tool first.
However, experts warn of potential risks. Without sufficient control, the tool could contribute to the spread of disinformation and widespread copyright infringement.
