Microsoft has launched testing of a new search feature in Windows 11 for Insider program participants. This search is powered by generative AI and uses a semantic index to make finding local files easier. Now, users can search for files using more natural language. A Copilot Plus computer is required, but an internet connection is not necessary thanks to NPU chips.
The search feature works in various places, such as Settings, File Explorer, and the taskbar. For now, it is limited to searching Windows settings and files in JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS formats. Users can configure which locations to index via “Settings” — “Privacy & Security” — “Searching Windows.” You can also enable the “Enhanced” option to index the entire computer.
Microsoft plans to gradually expand this feature, including data from cloud services such as OneDrive. Initially, the search will be available for Snapdragon-based computers with Copilot Plus, and later — for devices with Intel or AMD. The feature supports several languages, including Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
In addition to the new search feature, this Windows 11 build introduces AI-powered writing tools. They offer options from context menus when you press the Windows key and left-click. The new “Refine” option allows you to correct grammar in the selected text.
