Meta has entered into a licensing agreement with Midjourney to use its AI-based image and video generation technology. This was announced by Alexander Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, in his post on Threads. Teams from both companies will collaborate on implementing Midjourney’s technology into future Meta models and products. Meta has already integrated AI image creation features into Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, and offers video creation based on text prompts through Movie Gen.
Midjourney became known for generating realistic and unique images. In 2023, the startup began earning revenue from subscriptions starting at $10 per month, and in June introduced its first model for video creation. According to founder David Holz, the company remains independent and has not attracted external investors. Meta previously considered acquiring Midjourney, but the current agreement is limited to collaboration and licensing.
Alexander Wang noted that the partnership with Midjourney will help Meta create products capable of competing with market leaders such as OpenAI Sora, Black Forest Lab Flux, and Google Veo. The details of the agreement between the companies are not yet disclosed. It is known that the collaboration involves technical interaction between research teams, rather than just using Midjourney’s ready-made products in Meta’s services. It is expected that the companies will share additional information about joint developments soon.
