OpenAI plans to introduce an autonomous AI agent codenamed “Operator.” According to Bloomberg, the launch is scheduled for January 2025 as a preliminary research release and as a tool for developers. It will be part of OpenAI’s API for research and integration.
“Operator” will enable tasks to be performed directly on the user’s computer, opening up new possibilities for automation. Analysts believe such agents could become the next breakthrough in AI, comparable in scale to ChatGPT. Competition among tech giants is heating up—Google is preparing its agent for December, while Anthropic has already launched the “Computer Use” feature.
At a recent OpenAI event, Product Director Kevin Weil noted that “2025 will be the year of agentic systems.” The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, also confirmed the significance of such developments: “The next giant breakthrough will be agents.”
Developers expect that “Operator” will help not only with automation but also with reducing model costs, making them more accessible to users.
