The Irish Data Protection Commission has approached the Chinese company DeepSeek demanding information about the processing of Irish citizens’ data. This follows a similar request from the Italian regulator. In Italy, DeepSeek has already disappeared from the Google and Apple app stores. The company has twenty days to respond to the request.
The Italian regulator and the organization Euroconsumers have expressed concerns about DeepSeek’s processing of personal data. They want to know exactly what data is collected, where it comes from, and for what purposes it is used, including for AI system training. They are also interested in details about servers in China. Regulators emphasize how DeepSeek informs users about data processing, especially if data is collected via web scraping.
Euroconsumers also points out the lack of mechanisms to protect minors’ data at DeepSeek. Although the company claims its services are not intended for users under 18, it does not provide ways to verify age. Users aged 14 to 18 are advised to review the privacy policy together with an adult.
