X users can now use the Grok chatbot from xAI for free. Previously, access to Grok was limited to X Premium subscribers, but now all users can send up to ten messages every two hours. You can also generate up to ten images during the same period.
The Grok chatbot, known as a “humorous AI assistant,” was released last year. In August, xAI added an image generation feature, which sparked some controversy due to the possibility of creating questionable images. Now, Grok is trying to compete with other free chatbots, such as ChatGPT from OpenAI, Gemini from Google, Copilot from Microsoft, and Claude from Anthropic.
According to TechCrunch, xAI began testing a free version of Grok in certain regions, such as New Zealand, last month. “You no longer need a Premium subscription to access the Grok chatbot,” noted X users who noticed the changes.
xAI, which recently raised six billion dollars in its latest funding round, is considering launching a standalone app for Grok. This could help it compete with other popular chatbots that already have their own apps. Grok is integrated with the X platform, allowing it to use user posts to improve its responses.
