Google has introduced a new “News Brief” feature for its Google TV operating system. This feature leverages the capabilities of the AI assistant Gemini to create compact news summaries. Device owners will be able to ask Gemini to launch their news brief, and the AI will gather news from the internet and video headlines from YouTube from trusted news channels to quickly inform users about the day’s events.
The “News Brief” feature will become available for new and existing Google TV devices at the end of 2025. This is Google’s first dedicated AI-powered product for news summaries, although the company previously avoided this area due to risks associated with inaccuracies. The experience of other companies, such as OpenAI and Microsoft, has shown that AI can generate false or unreliable headlines, leading to legal issues.
Google demonstrates how “News Brief” can summarize news in real time. For example, the AI can report on the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau or on events at Capitol Hill. This is part of Google’s broader vision of how Gemini can transform interaction with TVs, making them more interactive. New TVs will feature sensors that detect users’ presence in the room.
In addition to news, users will be able to ask the TV about shows, movies, and YouTube videos, and Gemini will generate summaries of this content. With Gemini’s capabilities, Google aims to make television not just a medium for watching, but an interactive experience for users.
