Google has started rolling out the digital watermark SynthID for images edited with generative AI in Magic Editor on Pixel 9 devices. This watermark will be added to images altered using the Reimagine feature starting this week. Reimagine allows users to modify various aspects of digital photos using generative AI.
SynthID, developed by Google DeepMind, embeds a digital watermark directly into AI-generated content without altering the original. The watermark can be detected using features such as “About this image” in Google Photos. SynthID can also be used to detect watermarks in AI-generated texts and videos.
Google notes that some changes made with Reimagine may be too minor to be detected by SynthID. For example, changing the color of a small flower in the background of an image may go unnoticed by the watermark.
