Google is expanding the capabilities of generative AI in its NotebookLM service by working on a new audio summary feature with adjustable duration. Users will be able to choose a shorter, standard, or longer listening format in the “Customize audio summary” window. While the average audio duration is currently about ten minutes, the new longer mode can turn summaries into a podcast-like format.
Audio summaries are generated based on information from the user’s workspace — uploaded files, personal notes, as well as AI-generated notes. By selecting the duration, you can adapt summaries for different situations: a brief overview on the go or a more detailed analysis while working or studying.
NotebookLM is gradually transforming into a personal research assistant powered by AI, targeting not only students or researchers but also professionals and content creators who need in-depth audio summaries from various sources.
In addition to this feature, other minor updates have also been spotted in the service — a new search toggle in the chat may allow users to search the internet directly within the dialogue window, as well as visual changes in the “Studio” tab on the left panel. The launch date for the new audio feature has not been announced, but these changes indicate the tool’s gradual improvement for user convenience.
