Google has introduced a special version of its generative AI model Gemini, aimed at children under thirteen. Now, users with child accounts supervised by parents can interact with Gemini via the gemini.google.com website, as well as in mobile apps for Android and iOS. Parents received notifications about this update by email, where Google emphasizes additional restrictions for this version of the AI.
Gemini for children allows users to create songs, stories, and poems, get help with homework, ask questions, and discover new knowledge. At the same time, the company stresses that access to this model has more limitations than the standard version, and parents can manage access to Gemini through the Family Link service. If access is disabled, the child will see a message indicating that Gemini is unavailable for their account.
Google pays special attention to safety—parents are advised to explain to children that Gemini is not a real person, has no emotions, and does not always provide accurate answers. The company emphasizes that personal or sensitive information should not be entered and warns about the possibility of unwanted content appearing, despite the presence of filters.
Google is gradually rolling out access to Gemini for child accounts, so the new feature may not appear immediately for all users. The company promises to notify parents when a child first uses Gemini, adding even more control over AI use in the family.
