Google has expanded the capabilities of its generative AI Gemini by adding file upload and analysis features for free users. This function is already available in the Android app and on the gemini.google.com website, where a prompt appears: “Upload files to get quick summaries and actionable insights.” Users can select files from Google Drive or upload them directly from the web version or mobile app.
Gemini allows you to upload documents to get answers to questions, essentially providing advanced search, as well as content summaries. In addition, you can share spreadsheets to gain insights and even request chart creation. Supported file formats include text files (TXT), code files (C, CPP, PY, JAVA, PHP, SQL, HTML), documents (DOC, DOCX, PDF, RTF), as well as spreadsheet files (CSV, TSV, XLS, XLSX) and documents created in Google Docs.
File uploads are currently available only in the new Gemini 2.0 Flash version, while the previous 1.5 Flash version will soon be discontinued. Other features that still require a Gemini Advanced subscription include “Deep Research,” creating custom “Gems,” saved information, and the “Recall” function.
Google continues to update its products, making them more dynamic and interactive. In particular, the Deep Research feature is now available in the iPhone app, and Gemini Live is becoming even more engaging.
