Google has unveiled its first TV commercial, created entirely using the generative AI Veo 3. In the ad titled “Quick Getaway,” the main character, a plush toy turkey named Tom, searches for a travel destination without Thanksgiving celebrations. This is done using the “AI Mode” feature in the Google app on an Android smartphone, which selects cities with direct flights for the next day based on the query.
The commercial is part of the “Just Ask Google” campaign and will air on television today. Starting Saturday, the ad will be shown in cinemas and on digital platforms. Google also announced that the next part of this campaign will focus on a Christmas theme.
The video was created by the Google Creative Lab team, who initially developed the concept and then brought it to life using Veo 3 and other AI tools. Stylized toy characters were chosen for the ad to avoid artificial depictions of people.
Google did not indicate in the TV version of the ad that it was AI-created, believing it doesn’t matter to most viewers. However, on YouTube, the company labeled the video as “altered or synthetic content” in accordance with the platform’s policy.
