Google has started testing a new “AI Mode” in its search engine, which is based on the Gemini 2.0 model. This mode is designed to answer open-ended and exploratory queries that are not always well handled by traditional search results. Currently, this feature is being tested by Google employees in the US.

“AI Mode” offers a new approach to search, organizing information into easy-to-digest blocks with links to additional materials on the web. This can be useful for queries that require comparisons or advice, as well as those that involve follow-up questions. For example, queries like “How many boxes of spaghetti do you need for six adults and ten children?” or “Compare wool, down, and synthetic jackets” may receive more detailed answers.
The “AI Mode” interface resembles a chatbot, where users can enter queries and receive answers in a full-screen interface. The answers do not include the traditional ten blue links but offer cards for deeper exploration on the web. There is also the option to ask follow-up questions via a text field or voice input on mobile devices.
The new mode is expected to launch this year, as Google CEO Sundar Pichai noted that 2025 will be one of the most innovation-rich years for search. This opens up new opportunities for users seeking deeper and more diverse answers to their queries.
