GitHub Copilot, an AI-based code writing tool, has surpassed 20 million users. This was announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during the company’s quarterly report. A representative from GitHub clarified that this number includes all users who have ever used Copilot. In the last three months, five million new users have joined the service.
90% of Fortune 100 companies use GitHub Copilot. The number of corporate clients has increased by 75% compared to the previous quarter. According to Nadella, Copilot now generates more revenue for the company than the entire GitHub did at the time of Microsoft’s acquisition in 2018.
AI-based code writing tools are gaining popularity, and Copilot remains one of the most well-known products in this field. It faces competition from Cursor, which had over a million daily users in March and has already reached over $500 million in annual revenue. Both companies are developing AI agents for code review and automation of routine programming tasks.
Besides GitHub and Cursor, other players are emerging in the market. Google acquired the Windsurf team, and Cognition — developer Devin — also brought in part of this team. OpenAI and Anthropic offer their own products for programmers based on Codex and Claude Code models.
Competition in the AI-based code writing tools segment is intensifying, and companies continue to introduce new features for automating developers’ work.
