New research published by Harvard Business Review shows the impact of using generative AI on employees in various fields. Over four separate studies, more than 3,500 people performed work tasks, some of which they completed using generative tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini.
The results indicate that tasks completed with AI support were of higher quality — for example, letters created with the model were rated as more friendly and motivating. At the same time, when employees transitioned from working with generative AI to tasks that needed to be done independently, their intrinsic motivation decreased and feelings of boredom increased.
According to the study, the average level of motivation among those who initially worked with AI decreased by eleven percent, while feelings of boredom increased by twenty percent. Employees who performed tasks without AI assistance did not experience similar changes in mood.
The study authors advise employers to use generative AI primarily in the early stages of projects, such as when creating draft versions of documents, and then move on to stages where human creativity is needed.
