Google Workspace users received a new feature — now the AI Gemini automatically creates brief summaries for long conversations in Gmail. Previously, it was necessary to specify separately that a summary was needed, but now the model independently determines when such assistance might be useful and generates the main points of the conversation without additional actions from the user.
Summaries appear as a special card above emails in the mobile version of Gmail for English-speaking users. The model updates the summary content when new replies arrive in the conversation, so the user always sees up-to-date information about the main discussion topics.
The feature works automatically, but if the summary does not appear, it can be created manually, as before. Additionally, in Gmail settings, all AI features can be completely disabled by turning off “Smart features.” For organization administrators, there is an option to manage these settings for all users through the admin console.
Currently, the new feature is available only for emails in English and only in the mobile version of Gmail. Google does not specify when the feature will appear on desktop or for users without a Workspace subscription.
