The ChatGPT app for Windows has become available to all users, not just ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Now, Windows 10 and 11 users can take advantage of the dedicated app, which was previously only available to subscribers.
The Windows app features a “companion window” that allows you to use the chat alongside other programs on your computer. “It’s a small window you can summon by pressing Alt + Space,” noted product developer Alex Ambirikos.
Desktop apps were developed because users often copy and paste text from third-party programs into ChatGPT. “For example, instead of copying and pasting code, you can connect ChatGPT to your IDE or terminal,” explains Ambirikos.
Additionally, the Windows app can take screenshots, making it easier to send images to the chatbot. Users can also customize a hotkey to summon the companion window. OpenAI is also working on an update for the macOS app that will allow reading computer code from third-party programs.
