Researchers from universities in the USA and the UK have published two separate studies on the impact of ChatGPT on human creativity. In experiments, participants performed tasks such as generating gift ideas, creating toys from household items, and writing short stories. Some participants were allowed to use ChatGPT, while others relied only on internet searches or their own ideas.
The results showed that groups using AI received higher scores for creativity, interest, and quality of their ideas. However, these ideas were less diverse. For example, when creating a toy from a brick and a fan, almost all participants with ChatGPT suggested similar concepts, with a few even choosing the same name.
In the micro-story writing task, independent evaluators noted that the works of participants with AI support appeared more interesting and well-written. However, they often resembled each other, whereas texts written without AI assistance were more varied.
The authors of the studies point out that using ChatGPT helps individuals come up with better ideas and makes creative tasks easier. At the same time, it reduces the diversity of solutions and ideas in a group. If creativity-related fields start to heavily rely on AI, the products created may become similar to each other.
