Anthropic has announced a new feature for its API called “Citations.” This feature allows AI model responses to be integrated with sources (such as emails). The models can provide detailed references to specific sentences and excerpts from documents they use to generate answers.
“Citations” is already available in the Anthropic API and the Google Vertex AI platform. Developers can add files with sources so that the models automatically cite statements derived from these files. This feature is especially useful for document summarization, answering questions, and customer support, where having reliable sources of information is crucial.
The feature is not available for all Anthropic models—only for Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Haiku. Using “Citations” may result in additional costs, depending on the length and number of sources. At Anthropic’s standard API pricing, processing a hundred-page document will cost about $0.30 with Claude 3.5 Sonnet or $0.08 with Claude 3.5 Haiku.
This can be useful for developers seeking to reduce the number of errors and inaccuracies produced by AI. The new capabilities open up even more ways to integrate artificial intelligence into various fields, ensuring the reliability of the answers received.
