The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, published a new essay titled “The Gentle Singularity“, in which he outlines his vision of the impact of generative AI on humanity over the next fifteen years. Altman noted that by the year two thousand twenty-six, the world will “likely see the emergence of systems capable of finding new ideas”.
In April, OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman announced the launch of models o3 and o4-mini, which, according to him, were the first models to help scientists make new useful discoveries. OpenAI plans to intensify its efforts to create AI capable of generating new insights over the next year.
The development of similar models is also actively pursued by OpenAI’s competitors. In May, Google released research on the AlphaEvolve agent, which, according to the company, proposed new approaches to solving complex mathematical problems. The startup FutureHouse, backed by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, claimed its AI agent is capable of making a genuine scientific discovery. Anthropic announced in May the launch of a program to support scientific research involving AI.
