A new study from Andreessen Horowitz revealed that Google Gemini, Grok from xAI, and Meta AI are closing the gap with ChatGPT, which remains the most popular AI chatbot among users. The report on consumer AI products analyzed two and a half years of changes in the use of such services. The list of the most popular includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, Civitai, and Hugging Face.
For the first time, Google occupied four positions among the top web products with generative AI: Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs. These services have separate domains, allowing their growth to be tracked individually. Gemini has firmly secured the second place among mobile apps with nearly half the audience of ChatGPT, with almost 90% of Gemini users on Android.
Grok from xAI is rapidly gaining popularity and already ranks fourth among web products and 23rd among mobile applications. After the release of Grok 4 in July 2025, the number of active users of the service increased by almost 40%. Meta AI ranks 46th on web platforms but did not make it to the list of leading mobile applications partly due to the situation with publishing users’ posts without their consent.
Among Chinese developers, Quark, Doubao, and Kimi made it to the top twenty leaders, along with seven other companies exporting their AI technologies worldwide. On mobile platforms, 22 out of the top 50 apps were created in China, including Meitu, ByteDance, Gauth, and Hypic.
The report also mentions the emergence of new projects such as Lovable and Replit, which made it to the main list of popular AI products for the first time. The number of new mobile applications is growing as stores have already limited duplicates of ChatGPT, allowing original services to find their audience faster.
