Generative AI continues to capture users’ attention. According to Appfigures, spending on AI apps rose to $1.42 billion in 2024, a 274% increase compared to 2023. ChatGPT remains the leader among thousands of competing apps, outperforming them in total revenue. The growing popularity of such apps also benefits Apple and Google, who receive about 30% of the revenue from in-app purchases.
ChatGPT has been downloaded 353 million times, but the demographic distribution of users is uneven. More than half of ChatGPT’s mobile users are under 25, which may indicate their openness to new technologies. However, users aged 50 to 64 make up the second largest age group—20.2% of the total user base.
There is a significant gender gap among ChatGPT users. According to Appfigures, men make up 84.5% of all users. Women are often skeptical of this technology. According to an Axios survey, 53% of women would not allow their children to use AI, while among men this figure is 26%.
Despite ChatGPT’s success, an alternative has emerged on the market—DeepSeek. This free, open-source app has already surpassed OpenAI in the App Store rankings. However, maintaining its current level of popularity may be a challenge for the Chinese AI app.
